Costello – Illosophical

Posted in Irish Hip Hop Downloads, Irish Hip Hop Videos with tags , , , , , , , on July 11, 2012 by craicmusic

Brace yourselves, Illosophical is the debut album from Street Literature member Costello and half-way through 2012 it’s safe to say this is one of the highlights of the year.

A recent interview with Dublin-based music show Community Of Independents serves as a good introduction for new listeners

Fans of DFI Battle League will remember his clashes with Siyo, Desay and Genesis; however on Illosophical the battle mentality is gone instead we have a introspective, thought provoking LP, kept fresh with tracks like ‘Do The Best I Can‘ and ‘Love Affair‘.

The G.I production is sublime, and the beat choices complement the overall project perfectly. ‘Young Apprentice‘ and ‘The Devil’s A Liar‘ almost sound smokey while the drums keep it so raw. There isn’t a bad feature on here, ‘Let Me Blaze It f/ Willa Lee‘, ‘Analysis f/ Lethal Dialect‘ and ‘Played Out f/ 4Real & Jambo‘  demonstrate the scarily strong team of rhymers over at Working Class Records.

Illosophical has been available to stream since 15th March but now you are able to purchase it for €8 (click here)

Rhymes, beats, skratches and supersonic sounds that will bring civilisation to the brink of destruction…

‘Prophecy’ is an ancient vortex code located beyond the spoke of destiny, an electric terror weaving itself into the fabric of reality..

Warning: Listen at your own risk, the sonic journey may be perilous and strange for those of you with mechanic brains.

All mon-eye from album sales will go towards the mobilisation of the Skratch Bus, which with your support will travel Ireland and Europe doing shows to promote skilled musicians and connect great music with scenic locations.

Watch out for a 6-track follow up EP featuring Ophelia, Costello and DJackulate out soon.

Street Literature – Products Of The Environment

Posted in Irish Hip Hop Downloads with tags , , , , , , , , on September 7, 2011 by craicmusic

It’s a jungle out there… a jungle that hip hop appears to be thriving in.

A pack of 4 Dublin emcee’s collectively known as Street Literature are predators in their area. With a ferocious group dynamic and voices hungry to be heard.

Products Of The Environment‘ is their first cohesive release from the group and includes verses/production from the late, great Lunitic. When listening to this, I get the feeling there’s a lot of history wrapped up in the recording and thankfully it translates to some of the most authentic, inspiring, passionate hip hop the country will ever produce.

Released in July and I’m still playing catch up with write-ups, but it’s given me more time to get a proper feel for the record and understand it better.

The split production duties between Lunitic, G.I., DJ Moschops, John Doe and Teknikal offers some variety for listeners. John Doe has some strong beats that compliment Street Literature’s attitude & style. “Wildlife” flips an eastern influenced sample into a frantic, populated flurry of verses and “Collateral Damage” wouldn’t sound out-of-place on a Terawrizt project alongside Tony Mahoney instrumentals. While Lunitic’s beats are a throwback to the Urban Intelligence sound, they still fit nicely on ‘Products Of The Environment’. Tracks like “Through The Years” and “We Don’t Need You Anymore” prove the visionary talent Luntic possessed years before Ireland would catch on.

DJ Moschop’s “Who Comes Iller” featuring Fly is certainly the most upbeat you’ll find by Street Literature, and it’s a real head-nodder. G.I.’s opening verse is effortless and unsurprisingly his beats match up to his wise-child style. His production steals the show on this mixtape and surely certifies him as one of the top-tier producers in Ireland today. Whether it’s the  electronic/synthesised sounds on “Rising Like A Footsoldier” & “Products Of The Environment” to the sample driven “Give Me A Reason” & “Working Class Warrior” the beats are premium and truly exciting to hear.

In terms of lyrical content, fans of Street Literature expecting the gritty portrayal of inner city life displayed on Boss TV earlier in the year, won’t be disappointed. Each member holds their own and the solo projects to follow are genuinely a thrilling prospect. Lunitic is a prophet with his story-telling, 4Real’s got a joyful aggression on track, Costello brings the philosophy and G.I. masters the musical flow. Throw in appearances from Lethal Dialect, Jambo & D’n’D on paper it’s hard to imagine how “Products Of The Environment” could fail?

Sadly however it lacks the completeness of 2011’s strongest contenders ‘LD50‘ and ‘12 Labours‘. Probably partly due to the process involved in putting this project together, but that’s comparing it with 2 (classic imo) albums and this betters most other CDs for sale in your local stops . Considering this isn’t a retail LP like Lethal or Sons albums, this free collection of tunes from Street Literature is the best bargain you’ll find all year online. It’s savage and you can download it on Craic Music, wouldn’t want you getting lost now, afterall the jungle is massive.

Craic Products 2011

Posted in Irish Hip Hop Audio with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 12, 2011 by craicmusic

It’s been a busy start to New Year, now well into Feb we are still playing catch up to all the strong releases throughout January. The last DFI had 3 proper album/mixtapes going on sale, first release exclusively @ DFI 7
Nu-Centz & Terawrizt – Sense The Terror 2
Rob Steenson – First Up, Best Dressed
Lethal Dialect – LD50

And now the new Sons Phonetic – 12 Labours is available, not to mention the recent releases in Jan from:
Nugget – Ready To Diet
Mugsy – Havin The Craic EP
Syze – Syze Matters
Siyo – Weapon Of Mass Creation

The scene is looking healthy right now! Here’s a selection of tracks/rarities from the month passed that caught Craic Music’s attention.

Maverick Sabre & Guests – Ye Think Yer Hard

Thanks to Mr. Collie Collins for uploading this track from the archives. A collaboration organised way back featuring a mad stellar line-up of Terawrizt, Jonnyboy, Maverick Sabre, Redzer, CuCullen, Collie Collins, Bradshaw & Nugget. It’s a free download too, can’t say fairer than that!

4Real – The Drop

Some sick storytelling from former Urban Intelligence member 4Real. Captivating track and hopefully marks the return to hip hop on a more permanent basis.

Siyo – So Broke (prod. Pro P)

A quick freeverse from Big Siyo over Pro P production. Being broke is no joke, I’m sure plenty people will understand where Siyo’s coming from right now. Also check the latest track uploaded to Youtube,  ‘Bloody Murder’ is accompanied with stills from a recent video shoot

Johno Manley – Back Tonight

Johno Manley aka Nifty Skillz tempted to pick up the mic once again to clear up some issues. “Back Tonight” mightn’t be the reassurance fans would have hoped for, but it makes for entertaining listening. Nifty spits real talk over a slick instrumental.

Gerard i2 – Gon’ n Tell Them

Strabane’s self producing & song writing star drops another monster track that remains playable in clubs without compromising his credibility. Gerard i2 has been working the live circuit recently and you can catch him @ Katy Dalys 25th Feb w/Mr Mills & Mugsy. Also if you missed ‘2 Dirt For Radio‘ the debut album, make sure to download now!

A To B – Stretch It (feat. Collie)

This is a fun tune from the electro/pop/experimental duo A To B providing a funky beat for Collie to lace up in familiar fashion. Smile inducing music with some very upbeat drums.

Imogen Heap –  Headlock (Paper Tigers Remix)

Last but by no means least, an immersive dub influenced remix of Imogen Heap’s Headlock by Paper Tigers from Belfast. The music technology student currently has 5 free downloads hosted on his SoundCloud page. Some lovely chilled 2step, garage ambient sounds on offer with a comprehensive dubstep feel to the music.
