Jee4ce ripping up Kanye West’s Monster beat on his latest freestyle. It’s been a while since we last heard the Antrim man rhyming, he’s been focusing on production under the Father Jack moniker, so ‘Monster Remix’ marks a welcome return to spotlight.
I’ve got my fingers crossed for a Jee4ce/Father Jack project later this year, time will tell.

‘Ready To Diet‘ is the cleverly titled follow-up to ‘The Nugget Ya To Hate’ LP.
A full course of healthy beats, relatable rhymes and tongue in cheek humour is on offer here. Nugget’s strength lies in the hard-hitting punch lines and the ability to laugh at himself. One glance at the artwork and that should be quite obvious (shouts to Jebus, genius idea).
Generally poor constructed studio tracks plague hardened battle rappers albums but that’s not the case on ‘Ready To Diet‘. The line-up of guest features and production credits make this one of most exciting hip hop releases to come from Ireland in a very long time.
Starting with Nugget’s slick sounding intro over Noize Thievery’s backdrop, followed by a superb flow on ‘Soundtrack Of My Life‘. There is a wonderful feel to the beats whether it’s Tony Mahoney’s dark, movie-like sounds ‘Irish Tune’/'Path Of Life‘ or Sinful Deed’s spacey, laid back riddim ‘Doesn’t Really Matter ft. Collie’. Nugget seems at ease on the productions, his ideas are realistically captured without ever exceeding limits of reality or playing up a fake, glamorous lifestyle. This is a genuine portrayal of the ordinary day-to-day drag.
The self deprecating humour and honest feel on this record, make it special. Nugget doesn’t brag & boast about being number 1, he doesn’t need to. Fans value him as something of an underdog, funny then that his debut was the Nugget we love to hate because the Dublin anti hero may very well just turn out to be the Nugget we love to love.

Mugsy has uploaded his second solo release to SoundCloud for everyone to stream & listen to. The Letterkenny lyricist has touched on a number of styles on Havin The Craic EP with guitar rap, summer style laid back beats and a strangely catchy electro/techno track.
It’s when Mugsy takes on darker topics that the EP excels. ‘I Have A Dream’ really stood out from the first listen and still sounds fresh today. Freestate spits so urgently it sounds like he has a gun pointed at his head, it took me multiple listens to understand everything going on.
‘War Without Violence’ is a dark, aggressive, punchy rap song with a monster verse from Gerard i2 at the end. A very listenable EP from Mugsy as he prepares his next album.

I’m really excited about this. SertOne has been preparing the EP for a while now and with the release of some new beats & remixes for free download via SoundCloud it really is shaping up to be something quite special.
Have a listen and make your own mind up. Remixes include Kev Brown, Crystal Castles and the experimental MeLo-X with two brand new instrumentals to download as well. The beats have a proper blunted out feel to them, serious head nod music, sharing similarities to inspiriations Dilla & Flying Lotus while still sounding new and original.
The Crystal Castles remix in particular needs mentioned for the sheer amount of times I’ve listened to it and the saxaphone on Past, Present, Future brought an instant smile to my face. The ‘A View From Above’ EP is released on 21st Feb.

Alias Irish is originally from the Rebel County but now lives in London. An experienced wordsmith turning 32 this year, Alias boasts collaborations with the pioneering forces of Irish hip hop, RíRá, Exile Eye & DJ Mek. Featuring on 2009′s essential “Horses Work For Donkeys Wages” LP on ‘Knuckles Up’.
The debut solo release is nearing completion but it hasn’t been an easy process. After suffering the aftermath of a devastating gun incident in his family, Alias was in a dark place and it led him to a brief incarceration. Hip Hop has been the shining light and a chance to set things straight before moving on. The passion drives the music here, the rebel county flow is undeniable. Have a listen and see!
